SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WILD FIRE

UPDATES AND RESOURCES

Southern California is currently facing multiple significant wildfires, notably the Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, and Hurst Fire. Below is detailed information on each fire, including affected cities, fire size, containment status, and damage assessments:

HIGH WIND WARNING: The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a High Wind Warning for parts of Southern California, including Los Angeles and Ventura counties, effective from Tuesday, January 14, 4:00 AM through Wednesday, January 15, 12:00 PM.

Forecasts predict northeast winds ranging from 30 to 45 mph, with gusts potentially reaching up to 75 mph in certain areas.

Strong winds significantly elevate wildfire risks, so residents should stay informed, prepare for evacuations, secure property, and avoid activities that could ignite fires.

Current Fire Status
(Updated: 01/13/25 8:23 PM)

Palisades Fire:

  • Affected Areas: Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Santa Monica, Getty Center, Encino, and neighborhoods near Interstate 405.

  • Size: Over 23,713 acres burned.

  • Containment: Approximately 13%.

  • Structures Impacted: More than 5,300 structures destroyed.

  • Casualties: Eight fatalities confirmed.

Status: The fire continues to spread northeast, with containment efforts ongoing. Strong winds forecasted for the coming days may exacerbate the situation.

Eaton Fire:

  • Affected Areas: Altadena, Pasadena, and neighboring communities.

  • Size: Over 14,117 acres burned.

  • Containment: 33%.

  • Structures Impacted: Over 7,000 structures destroyed.

  • Casualties: Sixteen fatalities reported.

Status: Firefighters have made progress, increasing containment. However, evacuation orders remain in place as the fire continues to pose a threat to residential areas.

Hurst Fire:

  • Affected Areas: Sylmar area of the San Fernando Valley.

  • Size: Approximately 800 acres burned.

  • Containment: 95%

  • Structures Impacted: Damage assessments are ongoing.

Status: Containment efforts have significantly progressed. Evacuation orders have been lifted, but residents are advised to remain cautious and stay informed about potential flare-ups.

Recent reports indicate that Southern California Edison's (SCE) equipment may have played a role in the ignition of the Hurst Fire in Sylmar. SCE reported discovering a downed conductor on a tower in the Eagle Rock - Sylmar circuit shortly after the fire was reported on January 7. The Hurst Fire has burned over 770 acres and is 77% contained. Additionally, SCE has been notified by insurance companies to preserve evidence for another fire, the Eaton Fire, but no official link to their equipment has been established. Reuters

Southern California Edison (SCE) has stated in a report to the California Public Utilities Commission that there is no evidence its equipment was involved in the ignition of the massive Eaton Fire. The utility noted that “to date, no fire agency has suggested that SCE’s electric facilities were involved in the ignition or requested the removal and retention of any SCE equipment” as evidence. A preliminary analysis of a high-voltage transmission line near the fire's origin also showed “no interruptions or electrical anomalies” until more than an hour after the fire started. KQED

Eyewitness accounts have further highlighted concerns regarding utility involvement in the Eaton Fire. Residents near Eaton Canyon reported seeing flames near a large electrical tower shortly before the fire erupted. Within minutes, strong winds rapidly spread the blaze, forcing evacuations in Altadena and Hastings Ranch. The fire ultimately consumed over 10,600 acres, caused five fatalities, and destroyed or damaged approximately 1,000 structures in the area. These firsthand observations underscore the potential link between utility infrastructure and wildfire ignition, emphasizing the need for thorough investigations. Pasadena Now

It's important to note that utility equipment has been implicated in past wildfires in California. For instance, SCE agreed to pay $80 million to settle claims related to the 2017 Thomas Fire, which was sparked by its equipment. KTLA

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact causes of the current fires and any potential involvement of utility infrastructure.

Health Advisory:

Air Quality: Due to poor air quality resulting from smoke, a local health emergency has been declared. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities and use N95 masks if necessary.

Boil Water Notices:

Pacific Palisades (ZIP Code 90272) and Adjacent Communities: The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) has issued a boil water notice for residents in these areas. This advisory is due to heavy ash, debris, and pressure fluctuations in the water supply caused by the Palisades Fire. Residents are advised to boil tap water for at least one minute before consumption or use bottled water until further notice.

Do-Not-Drink Advisories:

  • Pasadena and Surrounding Areas Affected by the Eaton Fire: Pasadena Water and Power has issued a do-not-drink water advisory for areas impacted by the Eaton Fire, including zones under evacuation orders. The advisory cites debris and elevated turbidity in the water supply. Residents are strongly advised to use only bottled water for all drinking, cooking, and hygiene purposes, as boiling tap water will not make it safe for consumption.

Ocean Water Advisories:

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued ocean water use warnings for several beaches due to potential contamination from runoff related to firefighting efforts. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid swimming, surfing, and playing in ocean waters at the following locations:

  • Las Flores Creek at Las Flores State Beach: The entire swim area.

  • Walnut Creek at Paradise Cove: The entire swim area.

  • Solstice Creek at Dan Blocker County Beach: The entire swim area.

  • Marie Canyon Storm Drain at Puerco Beach: 100 yards up and down the coast from the public access steps.

  • Ramirez Creek at Paradise Cove: 100 yards up and down the coast from the Paradise Cove Pier.

  • Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro: The entire swim area.

  • Escondido Creek at Escondido State Beach: The entire swim area.

  • Topanga Canyon Beach in Malibu: 100 yards up and down the coast from the lagoon.

Safety Recommendations:

  1. Adhere to Evacuation Orders: Comply immediately if local authorities issue an evacuation order.

  2. Stay Informed: Monitor updates from reliable sources like CAL FIRE and CAL FIRE's Twitter. You can also download the Watch Duty App for real-time fire updates and government orders.

WILDFIRE SURVIVORS DESERVE BETTER THAN BAD FAITH

Surviving a wildfire is a harrowing experience—one that no Californian should have to endure. For many, the nightmare doesn’t end when the flames subside. Facing the loss or damage of your home while dealing with insurance delays, underpayments, or denials can feel like a second catastrophe.

At Kitsinian Law Firm, we understand your struggles. OUR COMMITMENT TO WILDFIRE VICTIMS:

A PROVEN TRACK RECORD

In 2020, electrical equipment maintained by Southern California Edison (SCE) sparked the devastating Woolsey Fire. The fire forced over 300,000 residents to evacuate, destroyed more than 1,500 structures, and caused billions of dollars in damages across Ventura and Los Angeles Counties.

Kitsinian Law Firm filed suit against SCE, representing communities shattered by this disaster. After years of determined litigation, we secured millions in settlements for wildfire victims, helping them rebuild their lives.

WHY WON’T MY INSURANCE COMPANY HELP ME?

Many Californians who survive wildfires find themselves battling insurance providers that deny, delay, or undervalue claims in bad faith. As a policyholder, you deserve a fair settlement that fully compensates you for your losses.

Unfortunately, insurance companies often prioritize profits over people. These billion-dollar corporations know the emotional and financial toll a wildfire takes and may exploit your vulnerability, hoping you won’t challenge their actions.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What is a wildfire claim?
A wildfire claim is a request for compensation made to your insurance company for damages caused by a wildfire. This can include property damage, loss of personal belongings, additional living expenses (ALE), and sometimes even emotional distress. If your claim is denied, delayed, or underpaid, you may need legal representation to ensure you receive the full compensation you deserve
  • How do I know if I have a wildfire claim?
If your home, property, or belongings were damaged or destroyed by a wildfire and you have insurance coverage, you may have a claim. Additionally, if you incurred evacuation expenses or other costs related to the fire, you may be eligible for compensation. An attorney can review your situation to determine whether you have a valid claim against your insurance company or another responsible party.
  • Why do I need an attorney for my wildfire claim?
Insurance companies often prioritize profits over policyholders, which can lead to delayed, denied, or undervalued claims. An experienced attorney can: Negotiate with the insurance company on your behalf. Ensure your claim includes all eligible damages. File a lawsuit if necessary to secure fair compensation. If your wildfire was caused by negligence (e.g., utility company failures), an attorney can also help you pursue additional claims against those responsible.
  • What damages can I recover in a wildfire claim?
Compensation may include: Property Damage: Repair or replacement of your home, structures, and landscaping. Personal Property: Loss of belongings such as furniture, clothing, and electronics. Additional Living Expenses (ALE): Costs for temporary housing, food, and transportation. Emotional Distress: In some cases, compensation for the trauma caused by the fire. Punitive Damages: If negligence or bad faith is proven, punitive damages may also apply.
  • What if my insurance company denies my wildfire claim?
If your claim is denied, the first step is to understand the reason for the denial. Common reasons include disputes over coverage, alleged policy lapses, or claims of insufficient evidence. An attorney can investigate the denial, challenge it if it is unjust, and work to secure the compensation you are owed.
  • How long do I have to file a wildfire claim or lawsuit?
Deadlines for filing wildfire claims or lawsuits depend on the type of claim: Insurance Claims: Typically, you must file within the timeframe specified in your policy, often 1-2 years from the date of the loss. Lawsuits Against Utility Companies: Deadlines vary by jurisdiction but often require filing within 2 years of the fire. In some instances, you may only have 6 months to file a claim. Consulting with an attorney promptly is crucial to ensure you don’t miss these deadlines.
  • Can I still file a claim if I don't have insurance?
Yes, even if you don’t have insurance, you may still have legal options. If the wildfire was caused by the negligence of a third party, such as a utility company, you may be able to file a lawsuit to recover damages.
  • How much does it cost to hire an attorney for my wildfire claim?
At Kitsinian Law Firm, we work on a contingency fee basis. This means you won’t pay any legal fees upfront, and we only get paid if we recover compensation for you. Your initial consultation is also completely free.
  • How long does it take to resolve a wildfire claim?
The timeline depends on the complexity of your case. Insurance claims may resolve in a few months, but litigation against negligent parties can take years, especially for large-scale wildfires. Our team works diligently to move your case forward while keeping you informed every step of the way.
  • Can I join a class-action lawsuit for wildfire damages?
Yes, if the wildfire was caused by a negligent party, you may be eligible to join a class-action lawsuit. However, class actions may not always be the best option for maximizing individual compensation. An attorney can help determine whether joining a class action or pursuing an individual claim is better for your case.
  • What should I do if I’ve been affected by a wildfire?
If you’ve been affected by a wildfire, it’s important to take the right steps to protect your rights and maximize your potential compensation. Before speaking with your insurance company or filing a claim, contact us for a free consultation. We can evaluate your claim, review your materials, and ensure that your claim is properly prepared to avoid common pitfalls and maximize your recovery. In the meantime, here’s what you should do: Document Your Damages: Take detailed photos and videos of all damage to your property, personal belongings, and the surrounding area. Keep Receipts: Save receipts for any expenses related to the wildfire, including temporary housing, meals, and other costs. Gather Records: Locate your insurance policy and any correspondence from your insurer. Contact Kitsinian Law Firm: Let us handle the communication with your insurance company and any third parties. We’ll advocate on your behalf and ensure you are treated fairly.
